The Annual Conference on Mediterranean and European Linguistic Anthropology seeks to redefine the way we view Mediterranean and European Language and Society. The COMELA holds its annual conference in selected universities globally, and publishes its journal, the JOMELA, the Journal of Mediterranean and European Linguistic Anthropology. Asmah Haji Omar
Professor Emeritus of the University of Malaya, where she has been Professor (Chair) of Malay Linguistics, Founder Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Instrumental in the implememtation of the National Language Policy at the UM, Asmah was responsible for the changeover to Malay as official and main language of the university.
ABOUT THIS SESSION
In the Asmah COMELA interview Part 2, she discusses studying Linguistics at SOAS, and her work at Universiti Malaya, pioneering the transformation of Malaysian, Indonesian, and Singaporean language and writing systems. She then focused on Southeast Asia, with global Sociolinguists and Anthropologists, implementing language policy and corpus planning. Subsequently, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka positioned Professor Asmah as crucial to Malaysian Sociolinguistics. SE Asian language owes its debt to Professor Asmah Haji Omar.
